Chicago is known as the \"Windy City\". Some people think this is because of the breeze(微风) that blows almost continuously. The city lies in the state of Illinois on the shore of one of the Great Lakers, Lake Michigan, which is the fifth largest freshwater body in the world. Skyscrapers(摩天楼) are an important part of Chicago's history. The first skyscraper in the USA was built in the city in 1884. It was an impressive building with 10 floors. The
skyscraper was pushed down in the end. Chicago is the home of other famous firsts. It was the birthplace of the refrigerated rail car, mail-order catalogs the car radio, (冷藏)(目录),
the TV remote control, the first Ferrari wheel, the first steel rail road, the first planetarium(天文馆) in the Western Hemisphere. Chicago is also the home to the first blood bank and the first drive-in bank. It is also the home to Lincoln Park Zoo, the oldest public zoo in the USA. Maybe the windy city should be called the city of firsts.
Chicago is a city which has the third largest population in the USA, after New York City and Los Angeles. A little more than two and a half million people live in the city that has more than 100neighbourhoods. The former President Barack Obama used to live in Chicago. Nearly 50 million people visit Chicago every year. Many of them visit the Willis Tower, formally known as the Sears Tower. It is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. It takes only a minute to get up to the 103rd floor Skydeck thanks to some of the fastest lifts in the world. From the Skydeck visitors can see four states: Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways. Usually it happens that a place has two names---One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits died hard, and the place continues to be called by its old name long after the meaning is lost.
Many roads and places in Singapore are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future persons. So we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries---in both the West and the East.
Another way of naming places is naming them after other places. Perhaps they were named to develop friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were first from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in old British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase, you will see Piccadilly Circus--- clearly named by some Royal Air Force soldiers who missed their hometown very much.
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places. Bras Basah Road is an interesting example. \"Base Basah\" means \"wet rice\" in Malay(马来语). Now why would anyone want to name a road \"Wet Rice Road\" The reason is simple. During the early days, people used to dry wet rice on the ground along this road.
A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is a \"Circular Road\", which is round. Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like \"Paya Lebar Cresent\". This road is called a crescent (月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again. 31. Bras Basah Road is named ______ .
A. after a person C. after an activity B. after a place D. by its shape
32. Which of the following places is named after a person? ______
A. Raffles Place B. Selector Airbase C. Piccadilly Circus D. Paya Lebar Crescent 33. What can be inferred from the passage ______
A. Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain. B. Some places in Singapore are named for fun.
C. The way to name their places in Singapore is quite different. D. Young people in Singapore know nothing about the pioneers.

The 63 -year-old Kazuo Ishiguro, who won the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature, is
world-famous as a writer of novel, but his early dream was to be a great singer and songwriter, like the winner of the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature, Bob Dylan.
His friend and former publisher Robert McCrum recalls young Ishiguro appearing at the publishing house Faber with his stories in one hand and a guitar over his shoulder. It was stories that gave him the great respect.
As his name shows, Ishiguro comes from a Japanese background, although he moved to
第4页,共16页
Britain from Japan at the age of 6 and is a British citizen who writes in English. He was educated at the University of East Anglia, a school that has become known for training writer. Ishiguro's writing is highly unrevealing(不予透露的). His characters are often unwilling to express themselves, except in a kind of code(密码). This certainly gives his writing a quality in common with that of Jane Austen, a writer to whom he is often compared. The best example of this is his novel The Remains of the Day, which later became a successful film. The central character of the book is a male servant called Stevens. He is a quite loyal servant to an English emperor, and is a repressed(压抑的) character. He misses out on feelings and love because he will not speak out his feelings to anyone. The story is told by Stevens, and his style is as polite and unrevealing as his behaviour. Of course, we have to read between the lines to find out the \"real\" story, which isn't quite the one the male servant is telling. Stevens finds it a challenge to communicate, and communication is often a theme in Ishiguro's novels.
In this writer's sense of the world, there is a gap between our feelings and our ability to communicate. The Nobel Committee emphasized(强调) this theme when it talked about Ishiguro's work.
34. The fifth paragraph mainly tells us about ______ .
A. the central character of the novel The Remains of the Day B. Kazuo Ishiguro's road to success C. Kazuo Ishiguro's personality D. Kazuo Ishiguro's writing style
35. Which of the following is NOT true about Kazuo Ishiguro? ______
A. He is Robert McCrum's friend.
B. He has lived in Britain for 58 years by 2018.
C. A theme of his novels is often about communication. D. The characters in his novels like to express themselves. 36. From the passage, we can infer ______ .
A. Kazuo Ishiguro hates to live in Japan
B. The Remains of the Day was published at Faber
C. Robert McCrum used to be a winner of the Nobel Prize D. the characters of Kazuo Ishiguro's novels are about himself
37. What's the best title for the passage? ______
A. The Remains of the Day. B. A loyal servant.
C. The theme of Kazuo Ishiguro's novels. D. Kazuo Ishiguro and his novels.
