Theremaybearisktohealthwherelowviscosityproductsareaspiratedintothelungsfollowingvomiting,al-thoughthisisuncommoninadults.Suchaspirationwouldcauseintenselocalirritationandchemicalpneu-monitis.Children,andthoseinwhomconsciousnessisimpaired,willbemoreatrisk.Emesisoflubricantsisnotusuallynecessary,unlessalargeamounthasbeeningested,orsomeothercompoundhasbeendis-solvedintheproduct.Ifthisisindicated,forexample,whenthereisrapidonsetofcentralnervoussystemde-pressionfromlargeingestedvolume-gastriclavageundercontrolledhospitalconditions,withfullprotectionoftheairwayisrequired.Supportivecaremayincludeoxygen,arterialbloodgasmonitoring,respiratorysup-port,and,ifaspirationhasoccurred,treatmentwithcorticosteriodsandantibiotics.Seizuresshouldbecon-trolledwithDiazepam,orappropriateequivalentdrug.5.FIREFIGHTINGMEASURESSpecificHazards

ThemanagementofHealthandSafetyatWorkRegulations1992requireemployerstoidentifyandevaluatetheriskstohealthandtoimplementappropriatemeasurestoeliminateorminimisethoserisks.Thechoiceofpersonalprotectiveequipmentishighlydependentuponlocalconditions,e.g.exposuretootherchemicalsubstancesandmicro-organisms,thermalhazards(protectionfromextremesofcoldandheat),electricalhazards,mechanicalhazardsandappropriatedegreeofmanualdexterityrequiredtoundertakeanactivity.Whilstthecontentofthissectionmayinformthechoiceofpersonalprotectiveequipmentused,thelimitationsofanyinformationwhichcanbeprovidedmustbefullyunderstood,e.g.personalprotectiveequipment

chosentoprotectemployeesfromoccasionalsplashesmaybeentirelyinadequateforactivitiesinvolvingpar-tialorcompleteimmersion.Ifthelevelsofoilmistorvapourinairarelikelytoexceedtheoccupationalexpos-urestandardsthenconsiderationshouldbegiventotheuseoflocalexhaustventilationtoreducepersonalexposure.

RespiratoryProtection

Atstandardtemperatureandpressure,theOccupationalExposureStandardforoilvapourisunlikelytobeexceeded.Careshouldbetakentokeepexposuresbelowapplicableoccupationalexposurelimits.Ifthiscannotbeachieved,useofarespiratorfittedwithanorganicvapourcartridgecombinedwithaparticulatepre-filtershouldbeconsidered.Halfmasks(EN149)orvalvedhalfmasks(EN405)incombinationwithtypeA2(EN141)andP2/3(EN143)pre-filtersmaybeconsidered.

HandProtection

Chemicalprotectiveglovesaremadefromawiderangeofmaterials,butthereisnosingleglovematerial(orcombinationofmaterials)whichgivesunlimitedresistancetoanyindividualorcombinationofsubstancesorpreparations.Theextentofthebreakthroughtimewillbeaffectedbyacombinationoffactorswhichincludepermeation,penetration,degradation,usepattern(fullimmersion,occasionalcontacts)andhowthegloveisstoredwhennotinuse.

Theoreticalmaximumlevelsofprotectionareseldomachievedinpracticeandtheactuallevelofprotectioncanbedifficulttoassess.Effectivebreakthroughtimeshouldbeusedwithcareandamarginofsafetyshouldbeapplied.HSEguidanceonprotectiveglovesrecommendsa75%safetyfactortobeappliedtoanyfiguresobtainedinalaboratorytest.Nitrileglovesmayofferrelativelylongbreakthroughtimesandslowpermeationrates.Testdata,e.gbreakthroughdataobtainedthroughteststandardEN374-3:1994areavailablefromreputableequipmentsuppliers.
