The 2021 winners of a major international environmental award have just been announced, and the list includes a Vietnamese conservationist who’s known for his vital work helping protect the pangolin (穿山甲) — the world’s most trafficked animal.

Van Nguyen grew up near Cuc Phuong National Park and, as a child, watched poachers(偷猎者) removing pangolin from their holes. “I saw a mum (pangolin), rolling into a ball to protect her baby.” Nguyen decided to make pangolin conservation his life’s work.

Nguyen set out to stop poaching and educate the Vietnamese public on the importance of pangolin conservation in order to reverse the condition of the pangolins. His efforts began with an education campaign. Nguyen also opened the Carnivore and Pangolin Education Center, the first of its kind in Vietnam, in order to provide wildlife conservation courses for students and the general public. Nguyen didn’t stop there; he established Vietnam’s first Asian Pangolin Rehabilitation (康复) Center.

Nguyen even worked with poachers to ask them to take him into the forest and show him how they track and catch pangolins. He also visited markets, restaurants, and doctors of traditional medicine to learn more about the demand for pangolins. In 2018, Nguyen created Vietnam’s first-ever anti-poaching unit. Nguyen has also looked to global strategies and worked with the management authority of the CITES to ban international trade for animals most threatened with extinction.

As one of the few people in the world working on pangolin conservation and rehabilitation, Nguyen is filling a necessary and important space for understanding and protecting this critically endangered animal.

24. What made Nguyen start pangolin protection? A. His love for pangolins. B. A childhood experience. C. Serious pangolin poaching. D. The importance of pangolins. 25. What does the underlined word “reverse” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Worsen. B. Analyze. C. Change. D. Maintain. 26. Why did Nguyen work with poachers?

第 1 页 共 6 页

A. To report them to the police. B. To learn about the market demand. C. To understand their tricks. D. To get pangolins to safer places. 27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. Taking Action: Stories of Pangolin

B. Pangolins: A Critically Endangered animal C. Saving Pangolins: Van Nguyen’s Life Mission D. Van Nguyen: An Environmental Award Winner

For many of us, there’s nothing better than burying our head in a good book. Whether it’s a crime story or a biography of someone’s amazing life, it’s good to read a book to switch off from the distractions of everyday life and help us relax. Maybe that’s why some of them are actually described as a therapy to sickness.

It may seem obvious that reading is good for us. It can be educational, and, as some say, it can ‘broaden the mind’. A good novel can make us happy or sad, or make us cry as we sympathize with characters. The power of books was recognized a few years ago by the British charity Reading Agency, who published a list of books that doctors could offer to patients, concerning topics from depression to chronic(慢性的)pain. It called this “bibliotherapy” and it’s become so successful that it’s about to be extended to children as well.

Professor Philip Davis studies the effects of literature and is author of a book called Reading for Life. He studied people in reading groups and found that it’s reading literature — written works thought to have artistic value, that has the best effect. “When reading something for pleasure, the brain begins to work from different parts, from a different hemisphere and it gets excited, it gets pre-emotional — and you can see the brain coming to life.” he said.

Of course, it’s easy in our smartphone generation to desert a good book and play with our phones instead. But opening up a paperback could be a simple way to help boost or maintain our mental health. It’s thought they can help you set targets and find focus. And they may allow you to see that awkward situation you’ve been anxious about for weeks from someone else’s perspective.

If you’re not a keen reader it can be hard to know where to begin. If the Reading Agency book list doesn’t appeal, you could read book reviews, visit a library or bookshop or ask a friend. Once you’ve found the right text, you’ll be attracted! And if you still love your technology, you could always use an e-reader.

28. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs? A. Books are a better way to cure sickness. B. Reading allows one to focus on daily life.

C. “Bibliotherapy” has proved effective for adults. D. Reading Agency first realized the power of books. 29. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To state functions of various books. B. To value medical effects of reading. C. To advocate people doing more reading.

D. To recommend books listed in Reading Agency. 30. According to Professor Phillip Davis, ____________. A. not all literature has artistic value B. written works have educational value C. literature is a main source of pleasure D. reading literature can activate the brain 31. What is the advantage of paperbacks over smartphones? A. They are less addictive.

B. They are more accessible.

People don’t like new things. It is not any different in health care. It took plenty of time until the stethoscope(听诊器), the symbol of health care was accepted by the medical community back in the 19th century. The instrument was invented by a French physician, who published its description in 1819, but it took several decades until doctors actually started using it.

I don’t expect any difference with artificial intelligence (AI). After many of my talks, physician colleagues ask me whether AI might replace them in their jobs and whether it can eventually become better at identifying the exact cause of an illness. Both will happen but not the way they imagine it. Huge waves are coming to health care. While some of physicians’ tasks will be taken over by AI, they will deal with patients with real care and more patience. Doctors will not have to struggle with being up-to-date in medical research, with administrative tasks, with consultation or making notes. They do not have to have a headache about how to choose the best treatment.

What even the most learned professors know cannot match cognitive (认知的) computers. As the amount of information they accumulate grows, the assistance of computing solutions in medical decisions is approaching. AI will help doctors on the personal level as well as hospitals and other medical institutions on the structural level. On the institutional level, the most obvious use of AI will be data management. It could also analyze entire health care systems quickly and easily.

AI will gradually appear in more and more hospitals and get through the initial stage very quickly. Although it is coming, it will need the medical community’s understanding, initiative (主动性) and drive for a better health care in order to work its best. If we introduced AI everywhere from Bolivia to Harvard, health care would not change a bit. There are many reasons for it but everyone in health care should play their part to improve those elements. 32. Why does the author refer to the stethoscope? A. To show it has many limitations. B. To imply it will give way to AI.

C. To explain it is widely used in treating disease. D. To illustrate people refuse to accept new things. 33. How will AI influence physicians? A. They needn’t do medical research. B. They’ll spare more time for patients. C. They’ll have difficulty with treatments. D. They’re likely to lose their jobs to AI.

34. What does the author intend to convey in Paragraph 3? A. AI will face uncertainties in the future. B. Cognitive computers do better than man. C. Existing health care has its disadvantages. D. AI will open a new dimension for health care.

35. What will the following paragraph(s) probably talk about? A. When health care will be improved. B. How people can promote the change. C. What benefits AI will bring about. D. How AI will transform health care. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Some lucky people are born with artistic talent, while others have to study to become expert in art. 36 Some people just let their creative urges out more easily than others. If the artistic path is calling you, begin the journey with some tiny steps and follow them.

Try a generous selection of different mediums of art. Everyone can be an artist. 37 So, if there's a specific type of art you'd like to learn more about, go for it, and don't be afraid to try other mediums as well. The most basic forms of art are drawing, painting, photography and sculpting.

Do your research and learn the basics. You can read books and articles about the medium(s) you have chosen to focus on. 38 If you feel like you need a little help, you can always improve your research with an art class.

39 Notice how the light changes during the day, how colors affect you, and how an interaction makes you feel. Take the time to become fully aware of your surroundings and let what you see enter your work.

Seek out the opinions of others. Don’t be afraid to show your work to people. 40 Maybe you have a hard time drawing hands, or you can't seem to get the handle of a clay mug (杯子) quite right. A second pair of eyes will help you see what makes it work.

A. Make time for your art every day.

B. Besides, you can also watch instructional videos. C. Ask a few people you trust what they think of your art. D. Observe the world around you with the eye of an artist. E. You just need to express your creative ideas in a great way. F. Whichever path you are on, be aware that everyone is an artist. G. One of the best ways to learn is by studying the works of others.

第二节 (满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段。使之构成一个完整的短文。 John reached into his backpack, searching for his cell phone. He was scared of having to spend the spring break at Aunt Letty’s farm. Although he had protested, his parents decided that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility, hard work, and respect for the land were valuable lessons.

“So, have you ever ridden a horse?” Aunt Letty asked, trying to turn his attention away from his phone. “Hmmm, no.” he answered. “Well, we’ve got a nice calm horse I think you’ll like. Hercules — sounds like a beast, but he’s basically a gentle giant — big, but kindhearted!” she said, smiling. John glanced at his aunt, annoyed that he was expected to work. He tried to text a friend but there was no cell reception.

The next few days were busy. The crow of the roosters woke them up, and they had breakfast before dawn. Then they went out to the barn to get the feed while the animals waited to be fed. The afternoons were filled with transporting hay, cleanup, and caring for the animals. At dusk, when the farm was finally quiet, Aunt Letty stretched her arms out and inhaled (吸气), “Just take a deep

work.

On the third day, without warning, Aunt Letty announced, “It’s time to meet Hercules.” She led John into the stables (马厩). Aunt Letty was right. Hercules was remarkable!

Aunt Letty held her hand open for John to take. Reluctantly, he let her guide his hand toward Hercules and allowed the magnificent creature to sniff his palm. Softly, Hercules rubbed its nose and mouth against him.

“It feels like velvet (天鹅绒) !” John beamed(眉开眼笑). An hour later, John was scratching Hercules on his neck and offering him carrots.

That night, as they headed toward the house, John was inspired. His arms spreading wide, he inhaled and said, “Take a breath of that sweet country air!” 注意:

第二节 读后续写 ( 满分 25 分)

The next morning, John found Aunt Letty waiting outside with Hercules. Running towards them with excitement, John asked Aunt Letty if he could take a ride with her and she nodded approval. So John sat in front of Aunt Letty and they headed slowly towards the riverbank nearby. On arrival, John was totally absorbed in the idyllic scenery: The river water slipped twinkling in the sunlight. The banks were lined with willows, gently swaying in the wind. A refreshing breeze was blowing gently. John closed his eyes, breathing in the earthy smell of soil and appreciating the birdsong. A sense of inner peace he had never experienced in the city swept over him then.

Fascinated by the breathtaking scenery in the countryside, John obviously changed a lot after the ride. He no longer frowned at work but fulfilled his assigned tasks on the farm devotedly instead. When the farm was finally quiet, he would ride Hercules with Aunt Letty / gallop with Aunt Letty, trotting around the beautiful farmland and inhaling the sweet country air. Soon, it was time for John to say goodbye. He stroked Hercules on the neck softly, hugged Aunt Letty and said, “My parents are right. The life here is a great experience for me. Could I spend my next spring break here?” Aunt Letty smiled and said yes.

高二英语听力原文

Text 1

M: I’m asked to take the youngest there.

W: Alice is one year younger than Eric. And Eric is two years older than Jack. M: Oh, I see. Text 2

W: I wish my hair was longer.

M: Yes. It’s a pity you had it cut. If only you had listened to me. Text 3

W: Give it back, or I’m going to tell Dad.

M: It doesn’t belong just to you. It was a present to both of us! You’ve been using the iPad for the last two hours. You need to share! Text 4

M: How about going on a picnic tomorrow, Helen?

W: I’d like to. But what’s a picnic without food and good weather? Text 5

W: John, I’m sorry. The tickets for Christmas Day are sold out. M: Really? I didn’t expect that.

W: It’s possible because everyone wants to travel by air during this holiday. Text 6

M: It's Saturday again. No alarm clock. No work. I love it.

W: How I want to have much free time as you do! So what do you usually do in your free time? M: At the moment, I’m spending much of my free time learning German. I also enjoy playing the piano now and then. W: Do you play any sports?

M: Not much. But I go to the sports club and work out once a week.

W: Why not try skating? It’s so exciting.

M: Yes, but too exciting. I once broke my leg while skating. I had to give it up. W: What a pity! Text 7

W: Hello, Mr. Smith. This is Janet Bush. M: Hello, Ms. Bush.

W: I’m afraid I’m going to be late for our appointment. My friend was supposed to pick me up from the airport, but she just called me and said she is stuck in traffic downtown, so she won’t be here right now. It's 11:00 now, so there is no way I’m going to the restaurant at 11:30 as we planned. I wonder if we could reschedule our appointment to sometime this afternoon. M: Certainly. What about 2 o’clock in my office? W: That would be fine. See you then. M: See you. Text 8

M: What made you decide on this type of occupation?

W: Oh, I love the sky. When I was a child, I imagined flying into the blue sky someday. Now, I think the day has come. And I like traveling very much and I enjoy working with people. M: Can you make yourself understood in English without too much difficulty?

W: Yes, I think I am quite fluent in English. I got the certificate of the Secondary English Training last month.

M: Do you know what the responsibilities are for a stewardess?

W: The main responsibility is to make the passengers relaxed and happy during the flight. And good service is also important. M: Are you in good health?

W: I just had a complete physical examination and I am in top condition. M: Have you had any nursing experience?

W: Yes, I have two years of nursing experience, and now I am working as a nurse in a hospital. Text 9

M: Here’s the store I was telling you about. I think you can solve your problem here. W: I hope so. Buying a gift for my mother’s birthday gets harder and harder every year. Getting something for people who have almost everything isn’t easy.

M: Well, we can begin by looking around the store. They have all kinds of great things. W: Looking at this frying pan, I wonder what it’s for.

M: It's for making eggs, I guess. Come over here. These biscuits look delicious. I wonder how they taste. There’s a sign that says: “Help yourself to a biscuit.” W: These are delicious, but they don’t solve my problem. M: What about these wine glasses? Would your mother like them?

W: I doubt it. She has dozens of wine glasses already.

M: Here’s an unusual gift — a beautiful Chinese teapot. And it’s not expensive at all. It’s only $10.45. Do you think your mother would like it?

W: It’s hard to make up my mind, but I think this is a good choice. Thanks for helping me. Text 10

M: Instagram is containing so many photos of food—now a pop-up diner in London is taking advantage of this new trend by letting people settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading photos of their dishes to social networks. I always thought people’s taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, but at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK, I’d probably do it too. “The Picture House” is the world’s first pay-by-photo restaurant — you order, click a photo of the food, share on Instagram and eat for free! The restaurant came up with the idea to cash in on people's addiction with photographing food and sharing the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found out that more than half of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized it was a better way to advertise their new dining range. The pop-up diner was open in Soho, London for three days in May, and is now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that customers don't have to pay for, if they photo and Instagram it. The reaction to “The Picture House” has been great so far. And the pay-by-picture concept has proven to be an effective way. Alternative payment methods are actually gaining popularity among a lot of business.
