话题2科普知识与现代科技 Passage 6[2017呼和浩特]
Soon computers and other machines will be able to remember you by looking at your eyes! The program works because everyone's eyes are different. So in the future you won't have to remember a number when you want to use a machine or take money out of a bank. You'll just have to look at the machine and it will be able to tell who you are.
The eye-recognition(眼睛识别)program has already been tested in shops and banks in the USA, Britain, Spain, Italy and Turkey. Soon this technology will take the place of all other ways of finding out who people are.
Eye-recognition is a course of recognition iris(虹膜), which includes the following steps. First, a kind of machine needs to collect different examples of one's iris from his eyes and store them. Second, when this person goes to the bank to take out money, this machine will have iris feature extraction(采集). Then, this machine will compare the examples kept in it with iris feature extraction. Once the examples and the feature extraction are the same, this person will be identified, and he will take out the money from the bank successfully.
However, scientists are also working on other systems. Machines will soon be able to know you from the shape of your face or hand or even your smell! We have already had machines that can tell who you are from your voice or the mark made by your finger. Eye-recognition is better than other kinds because your eyes don't change as you get older, and don't get dirty like hands or fingers, and even twins have different eyes. So the eye-recognition program can be up to 94% correct, depending on how good the technology is. However, some other programs may only be 51% correct now. In Britain, it was found that 91%of people who had tried it said that they liked the idea of eye-recognition.
In the future your computer will be looking at you in the eye. So smile!
C. poor and careless

Passage 7[2017绍兴改编]
Have you ever seen a car without a driver? It sounds crazy, but these computer-driven driverless cars will soon be filling roads near you. Companies like Google and Tesla have been designing and testing these cars, and the technology is there.
So how? The cars have sensors(感应器)all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. Road signs are read by cameras, and satellite navigation systems(卫星导航系统)are used so the car knows how to get where you want to go. All you have to do is type in the address! Finally, a central computer system takes in all the information that it receives from the sensors and cameras and works out when to speed up, stop and turn.
11
Sound like your idea of heaven(天堂)? Sitting back, looking out of the windows and even watching a film or reading a book while ‘driving' would be possible with this new technology. You wouldn't have to worry about remembering directions to where you're going. In addition, computers would also drive more safely than people—they would obey the rules and have quicker action times when in dangerous situations.
However, there are many drawbacks of driverless cars. Computers would have difficulties making ethical(道德的)decisions: if a child ran into the road, would the computer choose to hit the child or turn suddenly and potentially kill the car's passengers? Moreover, I personally find driving fun—I'd miss never driving a car myself. There would also be many other decisions to be made—should children, or drunk people, be allowed in a driverless car by themselves? Or would there need to be a person with a driving license in the car at all times?
I'm not certain if I'd want a driverless car—but it's only a matter of time before they'll become more affordable and popular on our roads. 1.When using a driverless car, you need only _______. A. read the road signs carefully B. check the cameras
C. put the address into the computer D. remember the directions
2.The cars have _______ all around which can find other cars and objects in the road. A. systems
B. sensors
C. technology
D. computers
3.The third paragraph mainly tells us about the _______ of driverless cars. A. instructions
B. standards
C. advantages
D. tests
4.The underlined word “potentially” in Paragraph 4 means “_______”. A. possibly
B. successfully
C. especially
D. naturally
5.What's the writer's opinion about future driverless cars? A. They'll cause more accidents. B. They'll be less expensive. C. They'll use less energy. D. They'll run much faster.

Passage 15
20
Many people travel to different places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines (航空公司) offer passengers food. But it is common that they feel bad about food taste. Do you agree?
To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don't want to lose customers.
However, according to scientific research, part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high altitude(海拔) we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure (气压) reduces one third of the sensibility (感觉) of our taste buds(味蕾). So our taste buds become senseless. The sad fact, however, is that our noses don't know it.
All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. They also help explain why airlines choose to offer passengers salty and spicy(辛辣的) food. Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.
Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.
Though scientists try their best, it is not as easy as they thought. Because they can't deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them.

2.What do airlines do to solve this problem? A. Get more customers. B. Offer more food. C. Improve their food. D. Reduce the ticket price.

B. one third

People can't see you when you're speaking on the phone, but they can hear you. So, the way you speak is especially important. In fact, researchers have calculated that 80% of communication over the phone is through your tone of voice; and only 20% is from the words you use. Here are our top tips on how to speak over the phone. 1. Facial Expressions
Your facial expression can influence your voice. For example, if you smile, your voice will sound warm and friendly, just the opposite, if you have an angry look on your face, it can make you sound unpleasant. 2. Volume
If you speak too loudly, you could sound angry. And if you speak too softly, it'll be difficult to hear you. So, speak loudly enough to be heard clearly, but not so loud that you're shouting. 3. Pace
The pace of your voice is how quickly you speak. And this can show how you feel. For example, an angry person might speak faster than normal. Or a downhearted person might speak very slowly. Try speaking a little more slowly than normal. This will make you sound confident, and it'll make it easier for the other person to understand you. 4. Gestures
Gesturing can influence the tone of your voice. When you gesture, you bring more air into the lungs, which can make your voice sound warmer. Gestures are also useful to help you stress the right words or even find the words you need. The best thing about gesturing during a phone call is that no one can see what you're doing, so you can gesture as wildly as you like!
24
5. Movement
If you're feeling nervous, stand up and move around. It will reduce the nervousness in your body and help your voice to sound more confident. 6. Pauses (停顿)
Using pauses every now and then can help you to slow down. This will make you sound more confident and in control. Also, if you pause after giving some new information, it'll give the other person time to understand it. At the same time, listen to how the other person uses pauses. They could tell you something about the speaker's feeling. For example, when a speaker is really angry, he might use pauses and says, “I...am...so...angry...” 1.How much of telephone communication is from the words you use? A. 20%.
B. 40%.
C. 60%.
D. 80%.
2.What can people do to reduce their nervousness on the phone? A. Gesture wildly. B. Move around. C. Raise their voices. D. Make facial expressions.
