Many cities around the world today are heavily polluted. Carelessmethods of production and lack of consumer demand for environmentfriendly products have contributed to the pollution problem. One result is thatmillions of tons of glass, paper, plastic, and metal containers are produced, and these are difficult to get rid of.
However, today, more and more consumers are choosing “green” anddemanding that the products they buy should be safe for the environment. Before they buy a product, they ask questions like these: “Will this shampoodamage the environment?” “Can this metal container be resued or can it onlybe used once?”
A recent study showed that two out of five adults now consider theenvironmental safety of a product before they buy it. This means thatcompanies must now change the way they make and sell their products tomake sure that they are “green”, that is, friendly to the environment.
Only a few years ago, it was impossible to find green products insupermarkets, but now there are hundreds. Some supermarket products carrylabels (标签) to show that the product is green. Some companies have madethe manufacturing (生产) of clean and safe products their main selling pointand emphasize it in their advertising. The concern for a safer and cleaner environment is making companiesrethink how they do business. If you ask people to name the one person who had the greatest effect onthe English language, you will get answers like “Shakespeare,” “SamuelJohnson, ” and “Webster, ” but none of these men had any effect at allcompared to a man who didn’t even speak English---William the Conqueror.
Before 1066, in the land we now call Great Britain lived peoplesbelonging to two major language groups. In the west-central region lived theWelsh, who spoke a Celtic language, and in the north lived the Scots, whoselanguage, though not the same as Welsh, was also Celtic. In the rest of thecountry lived the Saxons, actually a mixture of Anglos, Saxons, and otherGermanic and Nordic peoples, who spoke what we now call Anglo-Saxon (orOld English), a Germanic language. If this state of affairs had based, Englishtoday would be close to German.
But this state of affairs did not last. In 1066 the Normans led byWilliam defeated the Saxons and began their rule over England. For about acentury, French became the official language of English while Old Englishbecame the language of peasants. As a result, English words of politics andthe law come from French rather than German. In some cases, modernEnglish even shows a distinction (区别) between upper-class French andlover-class Anglo-Saxon in its words. We even have different words for somefoods, meat in particular, depending on whether it is still out in the fields or at
home ready to be cooked, which shows the fact that the Saxon peasants weredoing the farming, while the upper-class Normans were doing most of theeating.
When Americans visit Europe for the first time, they usually findGermany more “foreign” than France because the German they wee on signsand advertisements seems much mor eddifferent from English English thanFrench does. Few realize that the English language is acturally Germanic inits beginning and that the French influences are all the result of one man’sambition.
67. The two major languages spoken in what is now called Great Britianbefore 1066 were________.
A. Welsh and Scottish B. Nordic and Germanic
C. Celtic and Old English D. Anglo-Saxon and Germanic
68. Which of the following groups of words are, by inerence, rooted inFrench?
A. president, lawyer, beef B. president, bread, waterC. bread, field, sheep D. folk, field, cow
69. Why does France apeear less foreign than Germany to Americanson their first visit to Europe?
A. Most advertisements in France appear in English.
B. They know little of the history of the English language.C. Many French words are similar to English ones.D. They know French better than German.70. What is the subject discussed in the text?A. The history of Great Britain.
B. The similarity between English and French.C. The rule of England by William the Conqueror.D. The French influences on the English language.

Betty and Harold have been amarried for years. But one thing stillpuzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joansitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ballgame, come back three and halfhours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa? Talking?
What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?
Betty shrugs. Talk? We’re friends.
Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubinspent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. Nomatter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear:women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content andthe quality of those friendships is “marked and unmistakable.”
More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could notname a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yetthree-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, andalmost always it was a woman. More married men than women named theirwife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turnto in time of emotional distress (感情危机). “Most women, ” says Rubin,“identified (认定) at least one, usually more, trusted friends ot whom theycould turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importanceof these relationships in their lives.”
“In general, ” writes Rubin in her new book, “women’s friendships witheach other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships aremarked by shared activities. ” For the most part, Rubin says, interactions (交往) between men are emotionally controlled—a good fit with the socialrequirements of “manly behavior.”
“Even when a man is said to be a best friend, ” Rubin writes, “the twoshare little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman’s closest femalefriend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn’tunusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serioustrouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.”
