We went to the B.T Blackstone Library, not far from Lake Michigan, once a week. During every visit I found my way into a big reading room to touch a great and ancient globe sitting in front of the largest windows. I liked to look at Africa, with the coded colors of the different countries like the Belgian Congo and Rhodesia, and try to remember which countries were fighting to be free just as we were struggling for civil rights. I had heard Daddy talking about the struggle, arguing with the television as someone discussed it on a news show.
On Saturday, as I wandered through the young adult section. I saw a title: Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott. I could tell from looking at the shelf that she’d written a lot of books, but I
didn’t know anything about her. I had learned from experience that titles weren’t everything. A book that sounded great on the shelf could be dull once you got it home, and every bad book I brought home meant one less book to read until we went back in a week. So I sat in a chair near the shelves to skim the first paragraphs:
“Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents” grumbled Jo, lying on the rug. “It’s so dreadful to be poor” sighed Med, looking down at her old dress.
“I don’t think it’s fair for some girls to have plenty of pretty things, and other girls nothing at all” added little Amy, with an injured sniff.
“We have got Father and Mother and each other.” said Beth contentedly from her corner. I had decided on some other books to take home, because I didn’t look through the rest of the section that day. I read and read and read Little Women. I wouldn’t put it down until the end. Even the freedom to watch weekend television held no appeal for me in girls who could almost be like me, especially Jo, the heroine. It seemed to me a shame that she wasn’t Black: then our similarity would be complete. She loved to read, she loved to make up plays, she hated acting ladylike, she had a dreadful temper. I had found a kindred spirit(志趣相投的人). 21.What can be learned about the author’s father?
A. He was uncomfortable discussing politics with his children. B. He had strong feelings about the Civil Rights movement. C. He didn’t approve of most news covered on TV. D. He generally had a pessimistic world view. 【答案】B

B. interesting books are often very dull in their first few paragraphs. C. novels are usually more interesting than nonfiction works. D. book titles can sometimes be misleading. 【答案】D

For the business traveler who’s all about efficiency: check out these hotels that will get you in and out with a minimum trouble.
When you’re pressed for time on a business trip, nothing can infuriate you more than a slow hotel check-in process. On your next trip, try these hotels that offer a speedier check-in process.
◆Marriott Detroit Airport
Another option for business travelers in a hurry: Marriott is rolling out its mobile check-in app to 325 hotels this year, including the Marriott Detroit Airport hotel. (I’ve tested the app itself but not for a real visit quite yet.) here is the basic idea: you download the iPhone or Android app. The night before, you can “check-in” virtually. When you arrive, you get an alert that the room is ready and your key, which is already tied to your reservation, is waiting for you at the desk.
◆Hyatt Regency Minneapolis
I happened to stay at this hotel recently and liked how fast the kiosk check-in works. The kiosk asks you to insert your credit card, similar to an airport terminal. The whole process took about 3 minutes. When I left, I was equally impressed with the fast check-out: An agent meets you in the lobby with, an iPad and asks for an email to use for a receipt. The big advantage: you never have to wait in line.
◆Radisson LaCrosse
The Radisson is trying to make the kiosk process even faster. At a few select hotels like the Radisson Lacrosse in Wisconsin, you use a mobile app to register and then receive a barcode by email or text. When you get to the kiosk, you can scan the barcode to get your key without any other steps required. It’s super fast. You can find this new check-in system at the Radisson hotels in Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Phoenix as well.
25.What does the word ‘infuriate’, in Paragraph 2 most probably mean? A. annoy. B. remind. 【答案】A
26.Which two hotels offer a mobile app for customers to check in? A.Marriott Detroit Airport and Yotel New York . B. Marriott Detroit Airport and Radisson LaCrosse. C. Marriott Detroit Airport and Hyatt Regency Minneapolis. D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis and Radisson LaCrosse. 【答案】B
27.Which hotel will send you a receipt by email? A. Yotel New York. C. Radisson LaCrosse. 【答案】D
28. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Checking out the hotels will make you in trouble B. Three hotels that will make your life easier C. Try these hotels that offer you comfort D. Hotels for the travelers 【答案】B

This year, the Paris museum turns forty. The museum — the Pompidou Center — has a secure place in the heart of Paris and in Parisians’ hearts. But it wasn’t always the case.
“When it was first built, the reaction was one of disbelief,” said Serge Lasvignes, president of the Pompidou Center. “Le Monde newspaper wrote the museum’s construction brought shame on Paris, and city politicians thought their money had been totally wasted,” said Lasvignes. Critics said it looked like an oil refinery.
France’s first museum entirely devoted to contemporary art saw the light of day thanks to the determination of one man — Georges Pompidou, an art lover who served as France’s president from 1969 to 1974.
B. Marriott Detroit Airport.
D. Hyatt Regency Minneapolis.
C. amuse .
D. impress.
In 1971, he started an international competition to build the museum, originally known as the Centre Beaubourg. The winning team, which included three young architects from Britain and Italy, was completely unknown at the time. Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the two architects who saw the project through, made the plan a reality.
“The design took everyone by surprise. Someone said to Piano, ‘Your thing is terrible — with the escalator (自动扶梯) on the outside, it looks like a supermarket!’” Lasvignes added.
Forty years later, the museum still tries to make culture available to everyone, Lasvignes said. He calls the Pompidou Center a museum like no other. “We are not only a museum,” he said. “We have concerts, debates, performances, a library … and everything flows together.” Pompidou felt putting up walls between different forms of art was harmful. “So we are a house of culture where people return again and again, ” Lasvignes said.
The Pompidou Center is Europe’s biggest modern art museum; New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is the biggest in the world. “But the two museums have totally different strategies,” Lasvignes said. “The MoMA’s strategy is to collect masterpieces, and we try to represent an entire age”

The Sabi-Sand game reserve in South Africa is one of the richest wildlife regions in the African continent. Over 200 species of mammals and 350 different birds can be found in its vast plains, grasslands and forest.
The reserve is a wonderful habitat for wildlife. Various measures are being put in place. These include dealing with the problem of erosion (土壤侵蚀). In 1996 the reserve had abnormally high rainfall. This could have been absolutely disastrous. However, erosion was successfully fought by means of gabion stretchers, which were wire baskets filled with rocks. Workers also used a lot of old aerial(航空的) photographs, which helped return the land to its earlier state. This meant recreating open grassland areas to attract different types of animals.
In addition to these measures, the reserve employs a wide range of local workers. Building staff accommodation of any sort would have made a big impact on the environment and would have gone against the objective of keeping the reserve as natural as possible. Instead, transport is provided so employees can live a normal life with their families outside the sea, and human impact is kept to a minimum.
Visitors to the reserve spend about six hours a day in open vehicles, observing wildlife on game drives. They are accompanied by a ranger and a local tracker. Ranger and tracker together make a professional team. They are highly educated and have in-depth knowledge of the bush. Tourists can listen to ‘ranger-speak’ on the two-way radio and enjoy the moment on a game drive when a cheetah (猎豹) with her five cubs was lying in a sea of long yellow grass, her markings almost invisible.
The Sabi-Sand reserve is a place where animals have no fear of humans. It is impossible to estimate the benefits of spending time in such an environment.
33.What does the underlined word “This” in Paragraph 2 refer to ________. A. dealing with the problem of erosion
B. the abnormal high rainfall in 1996
C. various measures being put in place 【答案】B
34.The staff of the game reserve ________.

【答案】
Dear Mrs. Patterson,
I am Li Hua, a student in China, planning to learn a language during the vacation. I have seen your advertisement and am keen to gain some detailed information.
First, I would like to know what kinds of self-study facilities are available, as I shall certainly need to do some studying after school. Second, could you explain exactly what accommodation you provide? How much do you charge for this? However, even more important than accommodation is the course itself. I am an average student, so I assume you would have a class at the right level for me. Finally, please tell me how much the course fees are. Also, how can I get a discount?
I would appreciate it if you could reply to me at your earliest convenience. Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
