Skills: Taking part in meetings Lead-in: Ask Ss to translate the following terms. 1) classic brand 2) brand awareness 3) brand image luxury brand Language review: Past simple and present perfect Part A 1) Tell Ss they are going to study the simple past and present perfect and ask Ss if they can give you an example of each. 2) Give Ss a few minutes to read through and complete the language check box individually, asking for help if they need it. 3) Check answers with the whole class (present perfect, past simple). You could also draw their attention to the Course Book Grammar reference, page134. 4) Ask Ss to work through the exercise indivdually, then check their answers with a partner as they finish it. 5) Monitor the checking phase closely. 6) Finally, go through the answers with the whole class. Step Three Discussion: Three promotions 1) Divide the class into three groups: McDonald’s, Pepsi and the lrish Tourist Board. 2) Ss in each group read one of the class, checking vocabulary in their dictionries, with each other or with you. 3) Redivide the class into groups of three, with one member from each of ther original group (McDonald’s, Pepsi and the lrish Tourist Board.) in each new group. If the number of Ss in the class does not divide by three, some Ss may have to double up. 4) Ss read the remaining two cases. 5) Ss go through the discussion questions together. Each S help the other group members with vocabulary in the case he/she originally read, if necessary. Allow about ten minutes. Step Four Skills: Taking part in meetings PartA 1) Divide the class into small groups in five. 2) Set up the basic situation: Ss work for a marketing agency representing a well-known chain of bookshops. 3) Appoint or ask Ss to appoint a secretary in each grroup. 4) Ask Ss to go through the questionnaire, inventing answers to the questions to build up a client profile. 5) Take in the completed sheets and redistribute them so that each group has a profile built up by one of the other groups. Part B 1) Tell Ss that their client’s sales are falling rapidly. 2) Point out the Useful language box and tell them they may wish to use the language listed in it. Allow 10-minute or so. 3) Ask a representative from each group to give a two-minute presentation of their client profile. 1. Uses between past simple and present perfect. 2.
