Ali Cogia in Baghdad had a little shop where he sold sweets. He has saved one thousand pieces of gold.

One day he planned to visit Mecca, so he sold the shop, and carried whatever he could on a camel. He asked his friend, Hussain, to keep a pot of olives (橄榄) until he came back. Hussian agreed.

Seven years had passed since Ali left Baghdad. His pot had been in Hussain’s shop and never been touched. One day Hussain opened the pot thinking that Ali was perhaps dead after all these years. He found the olives at the top of the pot were already bad and all the bottom pf the pot was filled with pieces of gold. He then filled up the pot with fresh olives.

One month later, Ali came back to Baghdad to see Hussain for his pot. Ali took it home, but the gold was not there. So Ali took Hussain to Cadi, the judge. But Hussain denied everything. On his way home, Cadi happened to see some children playing a game. ‘Let me be Cadi,’ said one child. ‘You shall be Ali Cogia and you shall be Hussain’.

The child sat down, ‘Bring Ali Cogia!’ Another child tells Ali Cogia’s story.

‘Bring Hussain! What is your answer to Ali Cogia?’ so the child told Hussain’s story. The child who played Cogia said, ‘Bring the pot of olives to me!’

‘What beautiful olives!’ he said. Then he put his fingers to his mouth as of he was eating one of the olives.

‘A very good olive! But I don’t think that a seven-year-old olive can be as good as this. Bring me the olive sellers!’

‘Tell me,’ said the child to them, ’how long can olives be kept good enough?’ ‘Never longer than three years,’ said one.

‘Now, Hussain, you didn't tell the truth!\" the first child said. ‘Take Hussain away and give him a beating.’

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany and he died in Vienna in 1827. In his short life he changed the history of music.

Beethoven's father started to give him piano lessons when he was only 4. And the father recognized that his son was a musical genius. Beethoven played the piano in public for the first time when he was just 8 years old.

By 1783 Beethoven was receiving encouragement and financial support from the prince of the city of Bonn.

In 1787 Beethoven travelled to Vienna to seek out the famous composer Mozart as his teacher. Unfortunately, he had to return home only two months later because his mother died. His father became a heavy alcoholic (酒鬼), therefore, Beethoven had to become the breadwinner of his family despite (尽管) being only 18 years old. It was at this time that his strong and determined personality was formed.

Beethoven moved to Vienna in 1792 to study with the composer Joseph Haydn. The prince of Bonn continued to support him during this time and Beethoven started to become a master of musical techniques.

His first published works of music appeared in 1795. It is possible that he wrote many of these pieces earlier but he wanted to make a big impression by publishing them all together.

He gave up conducting (指挥) and performing in public in about 1800 as his hearing was getting worse. In the last years of his life Beethoven was almost deaf. Amazingly. he continued to write music until his death, and many of his most admired works come from his late period. The first of these was his Piano Concerto No.5. Six scientists received some good news: They were being treated to an eight-month, all free trip to Hawaii. There was just one little difficulty: They would be spending all eight months living under Mars-like conditions to simulate(模拟) a task to the planet. They carried out their own research projects, as NASA researchers watched to see whether they developed cabin fever, a feeling of upset and impatience when people have been inside for too long. The task is in the hope of better understanding life on Mars.

For the task , surfing, fresh air and sunshine were all off the menu. During the eight months, the scientists had to live together in just 1,300 square feet of living space, built on the side of the Mauna Loa volcano. Whenever they wanted to take a short walk outside their ‘house’, they had to put on 40-pound space suits. To make things even harder, showers were limited to eight minutes each week.

Perhaps it should not be overly surprising that with the six having now completed their task, they said re-entering the outside world was ‘a big joy’ .

One possible reason why the six have survived could be found in their blogs. The task commander, Ms Lenio, said she learnt to play an instrument and improved her French. Another scientist, Sophie Milam, excitedly posted a model boat made out of sticks by herself.

But it wasn't all fun. About halfway through the task, bad weather left them unable to use their solar batteries. They had to gather closely together for warmth and limit energy use to the important systems. Ms Lenio said, If we were really on Mars, that would be life or death. Here it's not like we would have died, so the same stress level as on Mars isn't there. \"

Luckily, it did seem that the scientists had succeeded in avoiding cabin fever- -Ms Lenio referred to her partners as ‘lovely people’.

42.Why does the author mention a trip to Hawaii?A.To introduce the special task in Hawaii.

B.To introduce the easy life on a trip to Hawaii.C.To show Hawaii is so popular among visitors.D.To show Hawaii is a perfect place to do research43.What can we learn from the scientists' blogs?A.Life on “Mars” was always colorful.B.They learned something from each other.C.They were hopeless during the task.D.They did what they liked to kill time.44.What do Ms Lenio's words in Paragraph 5 mean?A The task was actually meaningless B.Ms Lenio felt lucky to survive the taskC.They wouldn’t meet the problem on Mars D. The effort would be more serious on Mars45.What may be the best title of the passage?

A Six scientists Proved living on Mars Is PossibleB.Six Scientists Simulated a Task to Mars in HawaiiC.Six scientists Learnt a Lot During Their Trip to Mars

D.Six Scientists Compared Life in Hawaii with That on Mars

七、阅读与回答问题 (本题共5小题;每小题两分,满分10分 )

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题。

Though times have changed, falling asleep in class is still a common occurrence (常事) among teenagers.

Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An obvious reason is lack of sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep. Homework is a daily occurrence for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A teenager who

wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all contribute to (促成)teens having less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes teens lack sleep because of after-school jobs that are taken on to earn extra money for college, family expenses, or simply for clothes.

Physical problems are another factor that can cause students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia(失眠), which may keep a student up at night, causing exhaustion(疲惫不堪的) during class hours, is a serious problem that may require medical attention. Medical evidence

also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep pattern. Unluckily, these body clocks do not always work according to school timetables.

The effects of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to endear(使受喜爱) yourself to teachers. And, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful effect of sleeping in class is missing out on important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up failing classes.

Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all-too common occurrence. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work, while still finding enough time to sleep.

One possible version: Dear friends,

Society produces a lot of rubbish. It has become a big headache in every city. To solve this problem, our city has started a program of rubbish classification.

The meaning of the program is to save resources by making full use of recyclable rubbish and reduce pollution to make our living areas more beautiful.

What should we do in our daily life ? We are supposed to separate rubbish into different groups so that it can be treated differently. For example, paper and plastic can be collected for recycling, while harmful things like used batteries should be put into special dustbins for further treatment.

As teenagers, we should take action actively to make more people understand the importance of rubbish classification. What's more, going green to reduce rubbish is the best way to protect the environment. So, remember that everyone can make a difference.
