Wewouldcelebrateeachdepositbystoppingforanicecreamcone.Ialwaysgotchocolate.Dadalwaysgotvanilla.WhentheclerkattheicecreamparlorhandedDadhischarge,hewouldshowmethefewcoinsnestledinhispalm.“Whenwegethome,wewillstartfillingthejaragain.”
Healwaysletmedropthefirstcoinsintotheemptyjar.Astheyrattledaroundwithabrief,happyjingle,wegrinnedateachother.“Youwillgettothecollegeonpennies,nickles,dimes,andquarters.”hesaid.“Butyouwillgetthere.Iwillseetothat.”
