However, care should be taken when administered to patients who are volume depleted, vasoconstricted, or have severe heart block, as dexmedetomidine can cause hypotension and bradycardia. Moreover, there was no evidence of cardiovascular rebound 24 h after abrupt cessation of infusion. The importance of patient orientation and rousability is well established in ICU care. Dexmedetomidine is well suited for use in the intensive care environment, allowing sedated patients to be quickly aroused and oriented upon demand. Interestingly, this agent does not require discontinuation prior to weaning from mechanical ventilation.

General anesthesia is a drug-induced, reversible condition that includes specific behavioral and physiological traits — unconsciousness, amnesia, analgesia, and akinesia — with concomitant stability of the autonomic, cardiovascular, respiratory, and thermoregulatory systems. General anesthesia produces distinct patterns on the electroencephalogram (EEG), the most common of which is a progressive increase in low-frequency, high-amplitude activity as the level of general anesthesia deepens. How anesthetic drugs induce and maintain the behavioral states of general anesthesia is an important question in medicine and neuroscience. Substantial insights can be gained by considering the relationship of general anesthesia to sleep and to coma.
