There was something in the elderly woman’s gracethat caught my eye. Although (优雅)slow and unsure of her steps, the woman moved with deliberation(从容),and there was no hesitation in her gestures.
It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part-time holiday-season job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I could see the people outside rushing by.
The elderly woman entered the store, along with her daughter, who was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, sighing and checking her watch every few seconds. I guessed if she had possessed a rope, she would have fastened it to her mother to drag her along to keep step with the rush of other shoppers.
The elderly woman separated from her daughter and began to seek through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something. The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on an old piece of paper.
Rather than rush off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I thought I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.
Something about her deliberate movements reminded me of my own mother, who'd passed away the previous Christmas. I missed my mom and still felt regretful about the moments when I’d used my impatience to make her life unhappy.
As we walked along the back of the store, I introduced its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.
We found the DVD and she thanked me, saying that it was the one she’d enjoyed when she was her daughter’s age. Unwillingly, I accompanied her to the cash register. I realized I had to return the elderly woman to her daughter, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store. Paragraph 1:
So I walked over to her daughter.

I worked in the local pet registration office in our neighborhood. It had been a few months since our beloved Bama had passed away. He’d lived a good, long life. My husband, Alan, and I didn’t have children. Our boxer (拳狮犬)was our baby. After Bama’s death, we couldn’t bring ourselves to go through his toys to decide what to keep, so we put them all in our closet. I told myself I’d do it when I was ready. Apparently, I still wasn’t.
Now I sat on my front porch and sobbed. Friends and family had suggested we get another dog, but Alan and I dismissed the idea. We couldn’t go through that kind of heartbreak again. Besides, I didn’t want just any dog. I wanted Bama.
I gazed out over the yard. Across the street was a dog. A boxer. I wiped the tears from my eyes. Was he real or just a myth of my wishful imagination? I blinked. The boxer was still there. We locked eyes. He ran at a moderately swift pace across the street, straight toward me. Tentatively, I offered my hand. He licked me. I let out a surprised laugh.
This dog was younger than Bama, smaller. Bama had been white, but this dog’s fur got stripes. He wore a collar but had no ID.I knew he must belong to someone in the neighborhood, but I’d never seen another boxer around. I would have remembered if I had.
“Where did you come from?” I asked the dog, scratching him behind the ears. He didn’t seem lost. Just as if he were dropping by for a visit. “Alan!” I called. “You have to come see this!”
Alan joined me, and we sat together in wonder for a moment. Then the boxer got up and ran off. In the following days, he’d sometimes appear in the backyard when Alan and I were outside. Other times, he’d wait for us on the front porch. “I wish he, d announce himself, ” Alan joked. “Knock on the door or something.” The next day, there was a strange scratching at the door. I opened it and saw the mystery boxer, doggie smile wide.
The dog seemed to know exactly what my husband and I needed.

Thomas watched the irrigation canal (灌溉渠) for a sign of water. It looked as dry as he felt inside. Thomas's thoughts were interrupted as his younger sister, Maggie, came skipping across the field.
\"What are you giving Mama for her birthday?\" she asked.
Thomas felt his stomach turn. He had forgotten that Mama's birthday, the first since they left their hometown, was tomorrow. \"It's a surprise, Maggie,\" he answered. It was the truth.
Even he would be surprised.
Thomas would wish to be back in the mountains of their hometown. Surely Mama would want the same. At least it rained there. Each time it did, Mama, Thomas, and Maggie would sit on the front porch and watch for a rainbow. Then each of them picked out a favorite color in the rainbow. Mama always gave the same answer. \"Turquoise (蓝绿色,绿松石),\" she would finally say with a dreamy smile, pointing at the sky. \"Squeezed in tight, between the blue and green. Close your eyes and you can see it. If you could touch it, it would feel cool, like a breeze blowing across the stream.\"

\"Let's find out,\" Maggie yelled. Thomas and Maggie dug with their fingers and uncovered a small, round stone. In the center, there was a tiny hole.

The most delicious memories seem to happen during the holidays. And like a squirrel preparing for winter, I put them away to enjoy slowly during the long winter months. Sometimes, I enjoy them for years.
Among them are sweetest recollections: my little girls at the church play and the moment they got their first angel wings; a pink dolly stroller(手推车) wheeled into the bedroom with a tiny voice declaring, ''Look what Santa Claus brought me! ''; or New Year's snowmen wearing bright scarves borrowed from a grandma's fragrant drawer.
5
Linda 英语工作室 But there is one memory that is a little bittersweet -- sort of like 80% dark chocolate, but
still good for you.
This story brings to mind a colorful candy dish and a very little boy. The occasion was somewhere between Christmas and New Year's when a few candies in a dish remained behind, a bright spot in dull winter gray.
Wrapped in December's chill, my then 3-year old grandson, Justin, and I had dashed from the warmth of my parked car into the building where I planned to take care of a few work-related tasks.
A smiling secretary greeted us as we brushed the snowflakes and rubbed our hands to chase the cold. Then with my grandchild close to my side, I busied myself, finishing the items of business that had brought us there. But while his hand remained in mine, his eyes fell on the candy dish sitting nearby.
As we turned to leave, the thoughtful and very observant woman behind the desk asked the question all children wait to hear.
''Honey, '' the kindly woman said, peering over her glasses at Justin. ''Would you like a candy bar? '' she asked, her hand pushing the dish close for an easier reach.
The boy looked up questioningly, his eyes meeting mine, permission hanging in the air. A slight nod from me and then a hurried beeline to the candy dish followed. One candy bar was already in his hand.
Para 1: ''Justin! '' I said from the doorway.

outings on Saturdays. Sometimes we went to a park, or to a marina (码头) to look at boats. My favorites were trips to junk stores, where we could admire old electronic stuff. Once in a while we would buy something for 50 cents just to take it apart.
On the way home from these trips, Dad frequently stopped at the Dairy Queen for l0cent ice cream cones. Not every single time: just often enough. I couldn't expect it, but I could hope and pray from the time we started heading home to that critical corner where we would either go straight for the ice cream or turn and go home empty handed. That corner meant either mouthwatering excitement or disappointment.
A few times my father teased me by going home the long way. “I'm just going this wry for variety.” he would say, as we drove by the Dairy Queen without stopping. It was a game, and I was well fed, so we’re not talking torture (折磨) here.
On the best days he would ask, in a tone that made it sound novel and spontaneous, “Would you like an ice cream cone?” and I would say, “That sounds great, Dad!” I’d always have chocolate and he’d have vanilla. He would hand me 20 cents and I would run in to buy the usual. We'd eat them in the car. I loved my dad and I loved ice cream — so that was heaven.
On one fateful day, we were heading home, and I was hoping and praying for the beautiful sound of his offer. It came. “Would you like an ice cream cone today?” “That sounds great, Dad!” 注意:

After 20 years as a full-time wife and mother, I decided to be a school bus driver for I loved kids. When I think about my years of bus driving, many things crowd in, but mostly, I remember Charlie.
Charlie, eight years old, with blond hair and crystalline gray eyes, began riding my bus

in September of my fourth year driving. They all had stories to tell me about their summers. Charlie, though, ignored me. He didn’t even answer when I asked his name.
From that day on, Charlie was a trial. If a fight broke out, I didn’t have to turn my head to know who had started it. If a girl was crying, chances were Charlie had pulled her hair. No matter how I spoke to him, gently or firmly, he wouldn’t say a word. He’d just stare at me with those big gray eyes of his.
I later found out Charlie’s father was dead and he didn’t live with his mother. He deserves my patience, I thought. To my cheery “Good Morning”, he was silent. When I wished him a happy Halloween, he sneered (冷笑). Still I was sure that this child needed to feel some warmth from me. So, when he’d pass by, I’d pat him on the arm or sometimes gave him a hug.
Toward the end of that year, the kids on my bus gave me a small trophy inscribed (刻) “To the Best Bus Driver Ever”. I propped it up on the dashboard (仪表盘). On top I hung a small tin heart that a little girl had given me. In red paint she had written, “I love Polly and Polly loves me.”
The next day, I was delayed a few minutes talking to the principal. When I got on the bus I realized that the tin heart was gone. “Does anyone know what happened to the little heart that was up here?” I asked. For once with 39 children, there was silence.
One boy piped up, “Charlie was the first one on the bus. I bet he took it.” Other children joined the chorus, “Yeah! Charlie did it! Search him!”
I asked Charlie to come forward, stuck my hand into his pocket and immediately I felt it—the small tin heart. Charlie stared at me and seemed to be waiting for what he’d come to expect from the world. I was about to pull out the tin heart when I stopped myself. Let him keep it, a voice seemed to whisper.
“It must have fallen off before I got here,” I said to the kids. “I’ll probably find it back at the depot.” Without a word, Charlie returned to his seat. When he got off at his stop, he didn’t glance at me as usual.

As I sat by the window of our schoolhouse that afternoon, my heart began to sink further with each passing car. This was a day I had been looking forward to for weeks. Miss Pace had kept a running countdown on the blackboard, and our class had almost gone crazy by the time the much-anticipated “party Friday” had arrived.
I had happily volunteered my mother when Miss Pace requested cookie volunteers. Mom’s chocolate chips were the best on our block, and I knew they would be a hit with my classmates. But two o’clock passed, and there was no sign of her. Most of the other mothers had already come and gone, dropping off their offerings of dessert. My mother was missing in action.
“Don’t worry, Robbie. She’ll be along soon,” Miss Pace said as I looked sadly at the street. I looked at the wall clock just in time to see its black minute hand shift to half past two.
Around me, the noisy party went on, but I wouldn’t leave my window watch post. Miss Pace did her best to comfort me, but I just stayed there, holding out hope that the familiar family car would appear, carrying my embarrassed mother with a tin of her famous cookies under her arm.
The three o’clock bell soon awoke me from my thoughts and I sadly grabbed my schoolbag and headed home.
On the four-block walk, I plotted my revenge (报复). I would slam the front door upon entering, refuse to return her hug when she rushed over to me, and never speak to her again.
The house was empty when I arrived and I looked for a note on the refrigerator that might explain my mother’s absence, but found none. Heartbroken and angry, I was lying

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.
There was one day during elementary school when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.
How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran away. The next day at school one of my classmates said, \"Your mom only has one eye!\"
I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted(面对) her that day and said, \"If you're only going to make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?\"
My mom did not respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.
I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.

So I walked over to her daughter. “Mind some advice?” I asked. She rolled her eyes and said, “of course not.” I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. “Cherish her and cherish every single moment you can stay with her,” I said. And then I answered her curious expression by saying, “When she's gone, it's these little moments that will come back to you. Moments like this. I know.” Having finished saying this, I noticed the elderly woman moving with her deliberation back to her daughter.
Together they made their way toward the store's exit. Then the daughter glanced over her elderly mother. And slowly, almost unwillingly, she placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around her mothers’ shoulders and gently guided her back into the crowd. Tears filled my eyes when I watched them disappearing in the crowd.
2.The dog seemed to know exactly what we needed. Seeing him was helping me work through my grief. With each visit, I could feel the ache in my heart lessen. I noticed that I could now pass Bama’s favorite napping spots. I realized I could fondly recall how Bama would follow us from room to room—our constant companion. Memories, until recently, had hurt too much to go on. Something in my heart got relieved.
Recovering from pain of the great loss, I wanted to know who his owner was. One day at my workplace, a young man came in to register his pets, information. I found he had a boxer called Axle and lived just up the street from me. I told him his dog had been paying regular visits, which I was very grateful for the delight it brought me. Now Bama’s toys don’t just sit in the closet, gathering dust. Alan and I keep them out for Axle to enjoy whenever he comes over to visit. 3.The next day, there was a strange scratching at the door. I opened it and found my unexpected guest—the mystery boxer, who seemed to still remember me. He came over lightly and licked my hand, as if trying to erase my painful memories. Seeing him follow me from room to room, I gradually felt the ache in my heart lessen. I suddenly realized that I could pass Bama's favorite toys to my guest. So each day I would stand at the front door, waiting for the happy moment when my guest came and played with the toys.
A week later, a young man I'd never seen before came in to visit. The man said his family had just moved to the neighborhood. He asked me if I happened to see a dog, a boxer recently. I said \"Yes\" and told him actually \"my guest\" had been paying me regular visits. He looked embarrassed and then apologized for the trouble his cutie caused for me. I told him there is no need to apologize and actually he was a big help in working through my grief. It has been three years since that day. Now Bama's toys don't just sit in the room, gathering dust.
4.\"I have an idea,\" Thomas said cheerfully. \"We can give Mom turquoise for her birthday, because she likes rainbows like that.\" \"I think it's a good idea,\" Maggie said. \"Mother will love it. Let's go back to digging. We'll find as many as we can, picking the prettiest. The more, the better.\" Thomas and Maggie immediately began digging, hoping to find more such small stones. They
13

were digging for stones, and dark fell before they knew it.
Early the next morning, Thomas and Maggie set a small package on the table. Inside was the turquoise they had dug. It's a birthday present for their mother. \"Mom, come here quickly. What do you think is in the parcel?\" Maggie shouted. Mother came out of the kitchen and looked very surprised. When their mother opened the package, she saw the beautiful stones like a rainbow. Mother said \"thank you\" happily, saying it was the best birthday present she had ever received. Thomas and Maggie laughed happily.
5.''Justin!'' I said from the doorway. By this time his pudgy hands had grabbed one -- and only one -- and he made his way back to me. My voice was somewhat serious as I realized manners had been forgotten. ''What do you say? '' Hearing this, the little boy turned on his heel, promptly returning to the candy dish. ''Get Grandma one, too! '' I laughed. The secretary laughed. And even little Justin innocently giggled at the fun we were having.
In the humor of the moment, I felt something hard to swallow. There was a truth that lingered long after the strawberry candy taste had disappeared. What example had I set for this little one while often in my care? Was he learning more about ''getting'' and less about gratitude -- that heartfelt ''thank you''? In the years since, I've always loved to remember that moment. But one gift I hope we all leave with our children is the importance of a grateful heart. Really, what could be sweeter?
6.But then he said, “It sounds good to me too, Son. How would you like to treat today?” Twenty cents! I felt dizzy. I could afford it. But saving money was important. And when it was my money, ice cream just wasn't a good use of it. Why didn't it occur to me that this was a golden opportunity to give something back to my very generous father who had bought me 50 ice cream cones? But all I could think was “20 cents!” In a fit of selfish, miserly ingratitude, I said the awful words that have rung in my ears ever since. “Well, in that case, I guess I'll pass.”
My father just said, “Okay, Son.” But as we turned to head home, I realized how wrong I was and begged him to turn back. I felt awful for my selfishness and ungratefulness. He didn’t mention it, or even act disappointed. But I don't think he could have done anything to make a deeper impression on me. I learned that generosity goes two ways and gratefulness sometimes costs a little more than “thank you.” We went on another trip the next week, and as we approached the crucial corner, I said, “Dad, would you like an ice cream cone today? My treat.” 7.Paragraph 1:
A dozen years after my retirement I was in a department store, when someone said, “Polly?” I turned around to find it was Charlie who was in front of me. I was so surprised and happy to see him there. I asked him where he had been to after that incidence. He had a deep breath and told me that during the time he rode on my bus, he experienced much kindness and love from me like a gentle mother, which he needed eagerly at that time. But he didn’t had courage to give me a response. Because he was afraid to face the pain of losing love again just as his parents left him. But when he saw the small tin heart, he envied it so much that he stole it away. Finally he felt so
14

embarrassed that he had to leave. Paragraph 2:
That night I thought over his words. For a boy who had just lost the love of his parents, he needed love again so much. But at the same time, he didn’t had courage to give me a response. For me love is common and selfless. I just thought that I should give everybody my love and kindness not specific to anyone, which may finally hurt Charlie by chance. From then on, I learned that if I would give somebody my love, I must pay more attention to what he really needed.
8.“I’m so sorry, honey,” she said. “I just got busy and forgot.” I didn’t move. “Don’t forgive her,” I told myself. “She forgot you. Make her pay.” Then my mother did something completely unexpected. “I’m so sorry,” she sobbed softly. “I let you down. I let my little boy down.” She sank down on the bed and began to weep like a little girl. I was so shocked. I had never seen my mother cry. To my understanding, mothers weren’t supposed to.
I desperately tried to recall the words she had used to comfort me from times past when I cried. “It’s okay, Mom,” I stammered with difficulty. “We didn’t even need those cookies. There was plenty of food. Don’t cry. It’s all right. Really.” My words, as inadequate as they sounded to me, made my mother sit up. She wiped her eyes, and a slight smile appeared on her tear-stained cheeks. I smiled back awkwardly. We didn’t say another word but held each other in a long and tight embrace. 9.Paragraph 1:
I think of you all the time and I'm sorry that I went to your house and scared your children. I had never thought my visit would bring so much unhappiness to you. However, I was really so happy when I heard you were coming for the reunion, I missed you day and night. But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you.
