Presenter: Good evening and welcome to Issue for Today. Our topic tonight is experiment on animals and to start the discussion we have a strongly argued appeal from Jeff Sachs of the animal’s rights organization Animal Aid. Now Jeff, what’s all the fuss about? After all, 85 percent of doctors support experiments on animals.Jeff: This is first and foremost a moral question. What kind of people are we? As humans, we live in a society which protects the rights of the weak. We take care of the sick, the old and the disabled and punish those who are violent to others. But we also have a darker, cruel side. I believe that we experiment on animals because they are powerless to stop us, and we count their pain as unimportant when measured against our own interests. We live unhealthy lives and make animals suffer in the search for cures for our illnesses. We even see the production of a new lipstick as a good enough reason to inflict pain on animals. It’s not that we think animals can’t feel pain--we know very well that they do. And it’s dangerous to say that we use animals in experiments because they lack our intelligence. After all, this argument would allow us to experiment on mentally handicapped humans. Animals have feelings. Like us, they can suffer pain, fear and mental agony. Like us, each has a life to live. A rat’s life is important to a rat, whatever value a human may place on it. Why should one individual animal be made to suffer for the supposed benefits of people? Is it right to kill one human being in an experiment to save thousands of others? What if that human being were you?Presenter: Yeah, well, thank you. Now, let’s hear what you, the audience, and you at home think...

Japanese people, who never miss a chance to be photographed, were lining up to get their picture on a postage-stamp. Vanity stamps that feature personal photographs went on sale for the first time in Japan as part of an international postage stamp exhibition. The customer’s photo is taken with a digital camera and then printed on stamp sheets, a process that takes about five minutes. Sold in a sheet of 10 stamps for $8.80, little more than the cost of lunch in Tokyo, each stamp features a different scene from a traditional ukiyo-e along with the photo. The stamps can be used normally to mail a letter, and postal officials hope they will help promote interest in letter-writing in the Internet age. “Certainly e-mail is a useful method of communication, but letters are fun in a different way,” said an official in the Posts Ministry. “We want to show young people that letters can be fun too.” While similar stamp sheets debuted in Australia in 1999 and are now sold in some 12 nations and territories, Japan’s fondness for commemorative photos is likely to make them especially popular here. Indeed, officials had prepared 1,000 sheets but they were sold out in less than 30 minutes. Although the stamps are currently only available as a special service during the exhibition, postal officials said they might start selling them on a regular basis in the future.
11. What does each vanity stamp cost? A.$8.80 B.$0.88 C.$10 D.$5
12. What are the usage of these vanity stamps? A.They can be used normally to mail a letter. B.They can only be used for exhibition. C.They are used to attract more tourists.
D.They are used to post on famous buildings.

13. Why does Japan print vanity stamps?
A.Because the Japanese like taking photographs.
B.Because the Japanese like writing letters to each other.
C.Because the Japanese postal officials want to print a special stamp to catch worldwide attention.
D.Because the Japanese postal officials hope these stamps will help promote interests in letter-writing.
解析:细节题,文中明确提到答案“and the postal officials hope they will help promote interest in letter-writing in the Internet age”,后面官员又补充说“but letters are fun in a different way”。
W: Today, we invite Mr. Sonderim to talk something about Euro. Mr, Sonderim, could you tell us the origin of the Euro?M: Well, the 1992 Maastricht Treaty proposed a single currency between the European Union. The participating countries decided on the name “Euro” at a summit in Madrid in 1995 and the currency was launched on January 1, 1999.W: What is it worth?M: When the Euro was launched in 1999, one Euro was worth 1.17 US dollars or 71 British pence. However, the weakness of the Euro zone economies compared with that of the United States, combined with the inexperience of the European Central Bank in dealing with the international markets, has meant that since its launch the value of the Euro had declined significantly. In December 2001, one Euro was worth little more than 89 cents or 63 pennies, a 20 percent drop on its initial value.W: Do you think it will affect the daily life of ordinary people?M: I suppose so. For example, one of the major headaches for participating countries has been the conversion of public telephones, vending machines, and shopping trolleys to accept Euro coins. Although a conversion process has been in full swing since before 1999, there are reports that some countries are not ready for the Euro.W: So what does it look like?M: There are seven notes designed by the Austrian artist Robert Kalina. The designs show the “seven ages” of European development, with windows and gateways on the front, and bridges on the back. In addition, there are eight coins designed by the Belgian artist Luc Luycx. All Euro coins are round, but have differences in composition, weight, thickness, and milling to ensure that the blind can easily distinguish between them. On the front there is a European design, common to all coins, and on the back a “national” design from the central bank of issue. Despite the “national identities”, all coins can be spent throughout the Euro zone regardless of their origin.
14. When was euro launched? A.1992 B.1995 C.1999 D.2001
15. Why did the worth of euro drop?
A.It dropped due to the weakness of the eurozone economies and the inexperience of the European Central Bank in dealing with the international markets.
B.People in most European countries refused to use euro instead of their own currency.
C.Counterfeiters made a lot of fake notes since people were not familiar with the new currency.
D.Some countries are not ready for the euro. They stopped using euro in daily purchasing.
16. Why are the eight coins of euro different in composition, weight, thickness, and milling?
A.Because each nation wants to keep its characteristics.
B.Because they are designed by different artists from 8 countries. C.Because it will enable the blind to distinguish between them easily. D.Because Denmark and other countries want to have their own coins.
M: I think that intermarriage is a good idea. After all, we are living in a cosmopolitan country. We have so many different races living together peacefully, don’t we? It is nothing new to us, and I feel that intermarriage will work out.W: Personally, I feel that it is not a very sound idea. It is difficult for two people of entirely different religions to live and share a life together. They will face so many problems that it would be better if they don’t get married in the first place. M: Of course there will be problems. Even two people of the same religion have problems. It is the same in this case, except that it will be slightly more difficult, I guess.W: I agree with you, Henry. Naturally, there will be arguments and personal differences. Marriage thrives on a give-and-take policy, so a couple will have to learn to adapt to each other’s customs and traditions.M: That’s right. Married people should be more tolerant towards each other and be willing to learn about each other’s religion. Only then can understanding and acceptance be achieved ultimately.W: You talk as if it were very simple. It isn’t, you know. I should know, as I am a child of a mixed marriage.M: All right, you tell us why it is not such a good idea.W: You see, Henry, it depends on the individuals concerned. If two people of different religions marry, they should be prepared for the consequences. It is only after marriage that the vast
differences in the cultures begin to show. Little things, from food and clothes to bigger aspects like religious beliefs, tend to clash, leading eventually to a rift. Besides, this will be either personal pride or the reluctance to accept the other’s views. It may lead to a big gap between the parents, and their children may suffer a lot in between.M: You have a point there, but I can also tell you of several such couples who are living happily together.W: I suppose that you are right. Intermarriage can lead to happiness or sorrow, depending on how it is handled.

Section III Reading Comprehension (60 minutes)
Part BDirections: Read the following four texts. Answer the questions below each text by choosing A, B, C or D . Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1.
Six years later, in an about-face, the FBI admits that federal agents fired tear gas canisters capable of causing a fire at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas in 1993. But the official said the firing came several hours before the structure burst into flames, killing 80 people including the Davidians’ leader, David Koresh. “In looking into this, we’ve come across information that shows some canisters that can be deemed pyrotechnic in nature were fired—hours before the fire started,” the official said. “Devices were fired at the bunker, not at the main structure where the Davidians were camped out.” The Federal Bureau of Investigation maintains it did not start what turned to be a series of fiery bursts of flames that ended a 51-day standoff between branch members and the federal government. “This doesn’t change the bottom line that David Koresh started the fire and the government did not,” the official said. “It simple shows that devices that could probably be flammable were used in the early morning hours.” The law enforcement official said the canisters were fired not at the main structure where the Davidian members were camped out but at the nearby underground bunker. They bounced off the bunker’s concrete roof and landed in an open field well, the official said. The canisters were fired at around 6 a.m. , and the fire that destroyed the wooden compound started around noon, the official said. The official also added that other tear gas canisters used by agent that day were not flammable or potentially explosive. While Coulson denied the grenades played a role in starting the fire, his statement marked the first time that any U.S. government official has publicly contradicted the government’s position that federal agents used nothing on the final day of the siege at Waco that could have sparked the fire that engulfed the compound. The cause of the fiery end is a major focus of an ongoing inquiry by the Texas Rangers into the Waco siege.
41. The FBI official has NOT admitted that ______. A.the canisters were fired at the main structure
B.the canisters were fired hours before the fire started
C.federal agents fired tear gas canisters capable of causing a fire
D.other tear gas canisters that were not flammable or potentially explosive were also used
正确答案:A 解析:根据文中“the law enforcement official said the canisters were fired not at the main structure—but at the nearby underground bunker.”
42. From the passage, what information can be inferred about the event in
1993?
A.The compound was blown up by the FBI agents. B.The compound burst into flames at dawn.
C.The federal government besieged the compound for 51 days before the tragedy occurred.
D.About 80 people were killed in the event except the Davidians’ leader, David Koresh.
正确答案:C 解析:庄园毁于大火,而非爆炸,因此A是错误的;“the fire that destroyed the wooden compound started around noon”表示时间是中午而非早晨,因此B是错误的;从“killing 80 people including the Davidians’leader,David Koresh”来看,D是错误的;“flames that ended a 51-day standoff between branch members and the federal g
43. After reading the passage, how much do you know about the compound near Waco?
A.About 51 people lived in the compound at the time of the event in 1993. B.It consisted of a main structure and a bunker. C.It was built of stone. D.It was a schoolhouse.
解析:在大火中有80人丧生,因此居住在庄园里的人肯定不止51个,所以A是错误的;“the fire that destroyed the wooden compound started around noon”,可见其为木质结构,而非石制,因此C是错误的;“the compound near Waco”是Branch Davidian的居住地,从文中无法得出其为校舍的结论,因此D是不正确的;文中多处提到main structure和bunker,因此B为正确答案。
44. Coulson’s speech has ______.
A.made the matter even more complicated and confusing B.been approved by the government C.met sharp criticism
D.brought the whole matter into broad daylight
45. The attitude of the narrator towards this message is ______. A.neutral B.bitter C.excited
D.expectant
The question of whether war is inevitable is one, which has concerned many of the world’s great writers. Before considering this question, it will be useful to introduce some related concepts. Conflict, defined as opposition among social entities directed against one another, is distinguished from competition, defined as opposition among social entities independently striving for something, which is in inadequate supply. Competitors may not be aware of one another, while the parties to a conflict are. Conflict and competition are both categories of opposition, which has been defined as a process by which social entities function is the disservice of one another. Opposition is thus contrasted with cooperation, the process by which social entities function in the service of one another. These definitions are necessary because it is important to emphasize that competition between individuals or groups in inevitable in a world of limited resources, but conflict is not. Conflict, nevertheless, is very likely to occur, and is probably an essential and desirable element of human societies. Many authors have argued for the inevitability of war from the premise that in the struggle for existence among animal species, only the fittest survive. In general, however, this struggle in nature is competition, not conflict. Social animals, such as monkeys and cattle, fight to win or maintain leadership of the group. The struggle for existence occurs not in such fights, but in the competition for limited feeding areas and for occupancy of areas free from meat-eating animals. Those who fail in this competition starve to death or become victims to other species. This struggle for existence does not resemble human war, but rather the competition of individuals for jobs, markets, and materials. The essence of the struggle is the competition for the necessities of life that are insufficient to satisfy all. Among nations there is competition in developing resources, trades, skills, and a satisfactory way of life. The successful nations grow and prosper; the unsuccessful decline. While it is true that this competition may induce efforts to expand territory at the expense of others, and thus lead to conflict, it cannot be said that war-like conflict among nations is inevitable, although competition is.
46. In the first paragraph, the author gives the definitions of some terms in order to ______.
A.argue for the similarities between animal societies and human societies B.smooth out the conflicts in human societies C.distinguish between two kinds of opposition
D.summarize the characteristic features of opposition and cooperation
47. According to the author, competition differs from conflict in that ______. A.it results in war in most cases
B.it induces efforts to expand territory
C.it is a kind of opposition among social entities D.it is essentially a struggle for existence
48. The phrase “function in the disservice of one another” (Para. 1) most probably means ______.
A.betray each other B.harm one another
C.help to collaborate with each other D.benefit one another
49. The author indicates in the passage that conflict ______. A.is an inevitable struggle resulting from competition B.reflects the struggle among social animals
C.is an opposition among individual social entities D.can be avoided
50. The passage is probably intended to answer the question”______”. A.Is war inevitable?
B.Why is there conflict and competition? C.Is conflict desirable?
D.Can competition lead to conflict?
How efficient is our system of criminal trial? Does it really do the basic job we ask of it—convicting the guilty and acquitting the innocent? It is often said that the British trail system is more like a game than a serious attempt to do justice. The lawyers on each side are so engrossed in playing hard to win, challenging each other and the judge on technical points, that the object of finding out the truth is almost forgotten. All the effort is concentrated on the big day, on the dramatic cross examination of the key witnesses in front of the jury. Critics like to compare our “adversarial” system (resembling two adversaries engaged in a con test) with the continental “inquisitorial” system, under which the judge plays a more important inquiring role. In early times, in the Middle Ages, the systems of trial across Europe were similar. At that time trial by “ordeal” —especially a religious event—was the main way of testing guilt or innocence. When this way eventually abandoned the two systems parted company. On the continent church-trained legal officials took over the function of both prosecuting and judging, while in England these were largely left to lay people, the Justice of the Peace and the jurymen who were illiterate and this meant that all the evidence had to be put to them orally. This historical accident dominates procedure even today, with all evidence being given in open court by word of mouth on the crucial day. On the other hand, in France for instance, all the evidence is written before the trial under supervision by an investigating judge. This exhaustive pretrial looks very undramatic; much of it is just a public checking of the written records already gathered. The Americans adopted the British system lock, stock and barrel and enshrined it in their constitution. But, while the basic features of our systems are common, there are now significant differences in the way serious cases are handled. First, because the U. S. A. has virtually no contempt of court laws to prevent pretrial publicity in the newspaper and on television, Americans lawyers are allowed to question jurors about knowledge and beliefs. In Britain this is virtually never allowed, and a random selection of jurors who are presumed not to be prejudiced are empanelled. Secondly, there is no separate profession of barrister in the United States, and both prosecution and defense lawyers who are to present cases in court prepare themselves. They go out and visit the scene, track down and interview witnesses, and familiarize themselves personally with the background. In Britain it is the solicitor who prepares the case, and the barrister who appears in court is not even allowed to meet witness beforehand. British barristers also alternate doing both prosecution and defense work. Being kept distant from the preparation and regularly appearing for both sides, barristers are said to avoid becoming too personally involved, and can approach cases more dispassionately. American lawyers, however, often know their cases better. Reformers rightly want to learn from other countries’ mistakes and successes. But what is clear is that justice systems, largely because they are the result of long historical growth, are peculiarly difficult to
adapt piecemeal.

The initial impact of computers was in the area of entertainment. If you walked by a video arcade in the early 1980s, you could not have failed to notice that the use of video games was growing at what some considered an alarming rate. In 1981 the movie industry grossed$3 billion, video games took in an estimated $6 billion. That gives you some idea of just how big the computer industry had become. Video games employ the same technology as personal computers, and indeed many who bought personal computers did so primarily for playing games at home, thus saving their quarters. Though video games are not as popular as they were a few years ago, they did provide consumer with their first real reason to buy PCs. A more recent computer innovation, desktop publishing, supplies one good reason for those who write for a living to buy a PC. Desktop publishing is a deceptively simple description for an extremely complex group of hardware and software tools. You can now write text, edit text, draw illustrations, incorporate photographs, design page layouts, and print a finished document with a relatively inexpensive computer and laser printer. Although the new technology offers new freedom, there is a price to be paid for this freedom. With total control comes total responsibility. In fact, the issue of social responsibility in our new computer age has long been a topic of debate among computer, enthusiasts. Some people are concerned with the long-term social effects of the so-called computer revolution. Ironically, many PC pioneers who built and
marketed the first machines were 60s-style advocates of social change. They claim that while personal computer technology has the potential to make society more equal, it’s having the opposite effect since upper-middle-class people can afford them and lower-class people cannot. In addition, the ways that computers are used to monitor the activities of their users have evoked anxiety about the machine. Over 7 million Americans now have their work paced, controlled, and monitored by computers. A computer is more restrictive and powerful in the way it controls people than the old-fashioned assembly line. This can lead to what some have called “tech-stress”. Irritated eyes, back problems, and other physical symptoms have also been associated with the extensive use of computers. Although the personal computer may not have had the impact some predicted a decade age, the combination of computer technology with satellites and cable does promise innovations in the mass media that would have seemed astonishing just a few short years ago.

Part DDirections: Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2.
The proportion of works cut for the cinema in Britain dropped from 40 percent when I joined the BBFC in 1975 to less than 4 per cent when I left. But I don’t think that 20 years from now it will be possible to regulate any medium as closely as I regulated film. The internet is, of course, the greatest problem for this century. 【61】 The world will have to find a means, through some sort of international treaty or United Nations initiative, to control the material that’s now going totally unregulated into people’s homes. That said, it will only take one little country like Paraguay to refuse to sign a treaty for transmission to be unstoppable. Parental control is never going to be sufficient. 【62】 I’m still very worried about the impact of violent video games, even though researchers say their impact is moderated by the fact that players don’t so much experience the game as enjoy the technical manoeuvres (策略)that enable you to win. But in respect of violence in mainstream films, I’m more optimistic. Quite suddenly, tastes have changed, and it’s
no longer Stallone or Schwarzenegger who are the top stars, but Leonardo DiCaprio— that has taken everybody by surprise. 【63】 Go through the most successful films in Europe and America now and you will find virtually none that are violent.Quentin Tarantino didn’t usher in a new, violent generation, and films are becoming much more pre-social than one would have expected. Cinemagoing will undoubtedly survive. The new multiplexes are a glorious experience, offering perfect sound and picture and very comfortable seats, things which had died out in the 1980s.【64】 I can’t believe we’ve achieved that only to throw it away in favour of huddling around a 14-finch computer monitor to watch digitally—delivered movies at home. It will become increasingly cheap to make films, with cameras becoming smaller and lighter but remaining very precise. 【65】 That means greater chances for new talent to emerge, as it will be much easier for people to learn how to be better film-makers. People’s working lives will be shorter in the future, and once retired they will spend a lot of time learning to do things that amuse them—like making videos. Fifty years on we could well be media saturated as producers as well as audience: instead of writing letter, one will send little home movies entitled My Week.

Section IV Writing (35 minutes)
66. Directions:There has been a discussion recently on the issue of challenge in a newspaper. Write an essay of about 200 words to the newspaper to1. show your understanding of the symbolic meaning of the picture below1) the content of the picture2) the symbolic meaning3) the special understanding2. give a specific example/comment, and3. give your suggestion as to the best way to treat challenge.
Many people are afraid of and conquered by challenge because they equal challenge with difficulty. But, as wind can be utilized as drive for windmill, this picture implies that challenge can also be turned into impetus if treated properly. In real life being brave and confident enough to face up with challenge makes a sharp difference. The real world is full of stories of challenges. An example is found in Beijing’s host of the 2008 Olympics. It is so said because the previous games in Sydney have been credited as “the best one in history.” To surpass that, we feel
pressure coming from all sides such as money, experiences, expertise, and the host’s sports power. If we can collect all our resources available for holding the games, this challenge might be as well converted into impetus. In that way, people will be cheered up and dare to attempt all that is thought to be possible. The truth here is, if we don’t have the galls, the whole preparation work will collapse. Thus, challenge will become an unbearable burden over our shoulders. It is evident now that there is only one way out of challenge. We have to build up our muscles and live up to any seemingly insurmountable requirement. If we know the secret of winning over challenge is to take the role of the challenger, we’ll soon be strong players.
